SAN FRANCISCO — Jonathan Kuminga will miss his second consecutive game Saturday with a sprained right ankle. Kuminga was ruled out for Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks after twisting his ankle on a drive to the basket during pregame warmups in Memphis on Thursday. The Bucks won’t be at full strength either, with two-time league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo slated to sit out his third straight game with a soreness in his right hand. Kuminga, 20, limped off the FedExForum court after suffering a similar injury as Kevin Durant, who just one night prior sprained his left ankle in warmups after it buckled beneath him as he went for a layup.Kuminga’s X-rays came back negative Thursday, but Kuminga was spotted in the locker room post-game in Memphis wearing a walking boot to help stabilize and minimize swelling in the injured ankle. Before Saturday’s game, coach Steve Kerr is expected to provide an update on Kuminga, who missed 10 games in January with...

Alex Caruso embraces defensive partnership with Chicago Bulls newcomer Patrick Beverley: ‘It gives me energy’

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:01:03 GMT

The Chicago Bulls are starting small to close the regular season — and it’s exactly the style of play that defensive specialist Alex Caruso prefers.Caruso moved into a smaller starting lineup after the Bulls signed fellow defensive guard Patrick Beverley on Feb. 21. The pair displaced second-year point guard Ayo Dosunmu and third-year power forward Patrick Williams, who held down a lengthier starting lineup for the opening two-thirds of the season. At the time, coach Billy Donovan ascribed the change as a necessity to start games with experience and defensive versatility. And Caruso believes the lineup has allowed him and Beverley to set an immediate defensive pace for the Bulls.“I like it just because I get to have a little impact right away on the game,” Caruso said. “I’m able to set the tone in that way.”It’s rare for defensive specialists such as Caruso and Beverley to play on the court at the same time as a player so uniquely simil...

Garnet Hathaway has been a Bruin for a little over two weeks, but he’s come to appreciate Patrice Bergeron’s skills as a captain even more than he expected to.And his estimation went up even more on Saturday. The B’s were down 2-0 to the Detroit Red Wings and not playing very well when Bergeron, who would score the eventual equalizer, gathered his teammates and refocused them. From that point on, the B’s marched their way to a 3-2 victory.“He brought us together. He’s a great leader,” said Hathaway, who scored the third period game-winner. “We lean on him a lot and I think it’s a huge testament to how he is and his character. You look around the room and you see guys of high character working hard for each other.”What was Bergeron’s message?“What can we change? We know we can change, and what are we going to do?” responded Hathaway. “We can’t change the two goals that went in, so what can we alter to get back in the game? And just take ...
