Afton readies for Fourth of July celebration; longtime teacher is parade grand marshal The organizers of Afton’s Fourth of July parade and celebration are gearing up for the big event.The Afton Parade Committee announced this week that this year’s grand marshal will be Carolyn Deruyck, a retired Afton-Lakeland Elementary teacher and resident of Afton for more than 50 years.Carolyn Deruyck (Courtesy of Afton Parade Committee)The parade, which attracts thousands of spectators, starts at 1 p.m. July 4.“There was not a day in my teaching career that I did not enjoy,” said Deruyck, who taught most grade levels before settling into teaching fourth- and fifth-grade, specializing in writing, computer science and language arts. “This job is as much about the philosophy and character of the teacher as it is about the curriculum. Teen drowns in Meramec River in Crawford County CRAWFORD COUNTY, Mo. - An investigation is underway after a teenager drowned in the Meramec River in Crawford County on Friday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the drowning happened just before noon Friday. It occurred in the Meramec River near Thurman Lake Road. Investigators say the victim was swimming, went underwater and didn't resurface. Triple shooting at North St. Louis gas station one dead, two injured MSHP released a drowning report on Friday and identified the victim as Logan Wright, 18, of St. James, Missouri.Additional details on what led up to the drowning are unknown. MSHP Troop I, which covers a portion of central Missouri, is handling the investigation. FOX 2 will update if more information becomes available.

Colorado intestinal parasite outbreak linked to taco restaurant on Western Slope Colorado has seen a year’s worth of infections by an intestinal parasite in less than two months following an outbreak on the Western Slope.The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported 62 cases of cyclosporiasis since May 1. In a typical year, the state averages 63 cases. No hospitalizations or deaths have been linked to the outbreak.Most people infected with Cyclospora parasites get sick one to two weeks after eating or drinking something contaminated. The most common symptom is watery diarrhea, but some people experience loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, body aches, headaches, or fever. Arrest made in L.A. arson spree; suspect may be linked to more fires Authorities announced an arrest Friday of a man suspected of setting several fires in Los Angeles' Fairfax District.Delano Thompson, 34, was pulled over by police for speeding in Sunland on Wednesday and was subsequently taken into custody.
