EESC celebrates success of 'Fur Free Europe' Citizens' Initiative

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:23:18 GMT

On 20 September 2023, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) hosted a debate highlighting the achievements of the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) "Fur Free Europe". At its core, the initiative stands as a resounding call for a fur-free continent, pushing for a total ban on fur farming and on the sale of fur products within European markets. The ECI "Fur Free Europe" has collected the backing of an astonishing 1.5 million European citizens, achieving the required thresholds in 18 member states in less than 10 months. These figures reflect the outcome of the Conference on the Future of Europe and the most recent special Eurobarometer survey, both of which have resoundingly endorsed higher standards of animal welfare."The European Commission's current commitment to revising animal welfare legislation during its current mandate is a crucial opportunity to achieve a fur-free Europe", urged Elise Fleury, organiser of the ECI and Campaign Lead for Eurogroup for Animals. 49ers report card: Offense beats blitzing Giants but Bosa-led defense excels, too

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:23:18 GMT

SANTA CLARA — Here is how the 49ers (3-0) graded in Thursday night’s home-opening 30-12 win over the New York Giants (1-2):PASS OFFENSE: A-Brock Purdy faced the most blitz-happy defense of his NFL life (on 33-of-39 dropbacks), and he lived to talk about a 310-yard, two-touchdown, no-turnover victory. “There were some looks that were there. I was off or inaccurate, or things just didn’t happen right within our scheme,” Purdy said. “It was a little choppy at first. Once we got in a rhythm, we saw what they were doing.” Getting rid of the ball in an average of 2.34 seconds allowed Purdy to watch his playmakers rack up 215 yards after the catch. Nobody played bigger in Brandon Aiyuk’s absence than Deebo Samuel (six catches, 129 yards, 27-yard touchdown to cap the scoring). But big receptions also came from George Kittle (season-high 90 yards, seven catches), Christian McCaffrey (34 yards, five catches), Ronnie Bell (first career catch was a 9-yarder for the 49ers’ first touchdown)...

Review: ‘Flora and Son’ is a lovely movie for cynical times

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:23:18 GMT

By Jake Coyle | Associated PressJohn Carney, the Irish filmmaker of “Once,” “Sing Street” and “Begin Again,” makes the movie version of “three chords and the truth.”His films, unabashedly earnest, feel-good movies for cynical times, are lo-fi musicals that tell simple stories, charmingly. There are love interests, usually. But the abiding romance is for music. His films are the sort that would be easier to dismiss as “sentimental” if his central belief — in the redemptive power of music — didn’t happen to be kinda true. The song remains much the same in Carney’s latest charmer, “Flora and Son,” starring Eve Hewson as a working-class single mother in Dublin who takes up guitar lessons. Flora’s initial instinct when she snags a beat-up acoustic guitar out of a dumpster, is to give it to her troubled 14-year-old son, Max (Orén Kinlan) as a day-late birthday present. Max, though, is nonplussed.̶...

Presto’s Picks: Maryland, Virginia begin conference play, along with 6 top-10 teams

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:23:18 GMT

Dress rehearsals are nice, but there’s no substitute for being on stage facing the audience with the lights on and the curtain goes up for the first time. Maryland and Virginia both begin league play this weekend, and they’re not alone. Of the AP Top 25 teams in action this week, 16 will be playing conference openers. And that’s a good thing as we put college football’s bread course behind us, for the most part. No matter who you play outside your league, nobody knows what you can and can’t do better than those who reside in your neighborhood. So, after three tuneups, it’s time to see if Texas is really back and how wobbly Alabama might actually be. Will Michigan be hampered by an extremely soft nonleague slate? And will Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes continue to roam? No. 19 CU’s game at No. 10 Oregon is one of six matchups this week where both teams are ranked, and that doesn’t count a Clemson team that’s on the cusp of t...
